What to do when you are refused home insurance
Your first action when you have been refused or declined insurance is to check with the insurer to find out exactly why.
If the insurer is unable to reinstate the policy at renewal or mid-term, you will need to make contact with a specialist household insurer as soon as possible. This will make sure that your home is not left uninsured for any length of time.

Why have I been turned down for home insurance?
My home insurance policy has been cancelled from renewal – what can I do?
Unfortunately, when a policy comes up for renewal, your current insurer doesn’t have to continue to cover you. Insurers take on your cover based on how much of a risk that you pose to them. If this has changed then your current insurer may decide that you are not a risk they wish to insure anymore. This is in the same way that a new insurer may turn down cover.
Although it may be tempting to simply not declare these previous insurance issues to your new provider, this is not wise. Insurers share information with each other through a national database called CUE (Claims and Underwriting Exchange). This means that should your current provider check this system and discover undisclosed issues, your policy may be cancelled and no claim payments made. Worse still, your insurer could actually void your policy. This would mean your insurance would count as never having existed.
What can I do to prevent future incidents of home insurance refusal?
Although certain issues, such as expensive previous claims, are beyond your control there are certain ways that you can try and ensure you are an appealing insurance prospect. Make sure you are always completely honest when applying for new insurance policies, fully disclosing any negative information. You should also inform your insurer as soon as you become aware of any changes to you or your property. This could allow the situation to be managed effectively at the time and an agreeable solution reached with your insurer, avoiding future cancellation at short notice.
Steps to take if your home insurance has been refused:
- Your first port of call should be to contact your current company to confirm the reason. You can then see if there is any room for negotiation. Sometimes policies can be cancelled due to a misunderstanding. If you think your policy should still be live then this should be your first port of call.
- If the issue still cannot be sorted then contact the complaints department of your company. They should be able to deal with your complaint in-house and try to come to a good solution for everyone.
- If unhappy with the result of this internal complaint then you can take the issue to the FOS (Financial Ombudsman Service). They will look at the case and if necessary take action on your behalf. Insurers legally have to comply with instructions from the Ombudsman so you can be sure that the matter will be dealt with properly.
- The likely outcome when your insurance has been cancelled is that you will need to find yourself some new cover. It is probable that you will need to use a specialist provider in such a situation but be sure to shop around to ensure that you are getting the best deal.
Why have I been turned down for home insurance?
If your house is ever left unoccupied for more than 30 days, be it due to work commitments or because you’ve moved out to complete renovations, this could lead to cancellation. Standard policies tend to only allow 30 consecutive unoccupied days.
If your property is not made of standard brick and tiles, then you could find many standard insurers refuse to quote for you. Specialist constructions can often have much higher rebuild costs and be more difficult to source materials for.
Poor credit history, be that through CCJs or previous bankruptcies, can have a negative impact on your ability to obtain insurance. Insurers may fear future difficulty in paying for your cover.
Unspent criminal convictions can cause issues when insuring your property. If you do not disclose these when setting up a policy and your insurer finds out, they are likely to cancel your policy mid-term. Many standard insurers can be reluctant to take on the cover at all.
Working from home means you may have business visitors at your property, increasing the theft risk. Your address may also be promoted as the business address, again increasing the risk of damage to the property and making insurers reluctant to cover you.
Storing business stock at home can mean that insurers see there to be a much higher risk at the property. If you start a home business during the life of your insurance policy then this could lead to a mid-term cancellation.
Occupations can be classed as high-risk either for personal reasons or because your work means that your property is often unoccupied. If your job falls into the high-risk group for your insurer you may find you policy refused or cancelled.
Poor state of repair
Your insurance will have been offered on the basis that your home is in a good, liveable condition. If this changes and the property falls into disrepair then you may be refused insurance.
